Incumbents perform specialized support functions requiring in-depth knowledge and experience in the Records Section and provide direct support to high-level management.

  • Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 50 net wpm within the last 2 years
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License may be required upon appointment for some positions

Sheriff’s Records Supervisor

  • Three years of clerical experience including one year of experience as a Sheriff’s Records Specialist OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 50 net words per minute.
  • Possession of a Valid California Driver’s License is required upon appointment for some positions.

  • Performs technical support functions required to research and process law enforcement records within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities, or Records, which may include: interacting with incarcerated persons, criminal database verification, and providing assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement

The Sheriff’s Support Technician is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Support Specialist, which performs specialized support activities requiring knowledge and experience in the area of assignment.

  • Performs a wide variety of clerical support services to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, which may include: interacting with incarcerated persons, criminal database verification and providing assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement
  • Depending on incumbents may be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays and may be required to work overtime and in outlying County areas

Aircraft Pilot

 

Job Description

This is a continuous recruitment position.

Under direction, operates a rotary-wing and/or fixed-wing aircraft in support of law enforcement operations, search-and-rescue operations, marijuana eradication, surveillance operations and surveillance operations.

Aircraft pilots may fly in urban, desert, and mountainous environments in support of law enforcement operations; may be required to work shifts of varying durations and days as needed; may be required to instruct non-aviation personnel on the safety principles to be observed while working on or around aircraft.

Requirements

Examination:
Appraisal (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the work based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of application.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent AND the following certifications/licenses:
  • Valid and current FAA Second Class Medical Certificate issued by an authorized medical examiner (AME).
  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.

AND

Option I:

Required helicopter flight experience:

  • FAA Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot with Rotorcraft-Helicopter rating.
  • Minimum 2000 hours PIC Helicopter flight time

  • Minimum 500 hours PIC performing low-level missions in law-enforcement patrol, search and rescue, vertical reference operations over mountainous or forested areas, or comparable fire service or military operations.

Desired Helicopter Flight Experience

  • Certified Flight Instructor with Rotorcraft-Helicopter endorsement
  • Night Vision Goggle Instructor endorsement
  • Vertical reference and external load operations experience
  • UH-1H or other similar Bell Helicopter

Option II:

Required Fixed-Wing experience:

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:
Physical Examination: In addition to requiring a Class II Medical Certificate, a rigid medical examination by the County Physician is required. The examination includes spine and chest x-rays, blood chemistry and electro-cardiograph tests. Weight must be proportionate to height and age.

Vision: 20-100 uncorrected in each eye, corrected to 20-20, no color deficiency. No permanent or progressive eye abnormalities.

Hearing: No hearing deficiency.

Job Description

Under direction of the Supervising Deputy Public Administrator, manages a caseload of decedent estates as authorized; determines the need for and insures that investigations are conducted and itemized inventories of estate assets are prepared; oversees the authorized liquidation and distribution of real and personal property; and performs related work as required.

This position is assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Public Administrator Section and works closely with other public agencies. The position reports directly to the Supervising Deputy Public Administrator and may supervise support staff assigned to Public Administrator functions. The incumbent is responsible for overall case management to ensure the timely progression of probate-required administrative procedures

Requirements
  • Graduation from a four year college or university with a degree in business, public administration, management, accounting, or behavioral science and

Sheriff’s Aircraft Mechanic

Job Description

Under direction, maintains, repairs, and modifies helicopters, airplanes and all related aircraft systems and components to critically close tolerances to ensure airworthiness; performs related work as required. Incumbents repair and service aircraft and engines under direction of the Supervising Aircraft Mechanic.

The Sheriff Aircraft Mechanic position repairs and services aircraft and engines as determined by assignment.

Requirements

License: Incumbents are required to have and maintain a valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate.

  • Two (2) years of experience as an aircraft mechanic, including one (1) year of experience with light and/or medium turbine helicopters.

Knowledge of: approved aircraft maintenance and repair principles, procedures and techniques; applicable FAA regulations and requirements: mathematical processes, including algebraic and geometric principles; blade tracking and balancing methods and equipment; operations and capabilities of applicable aircraft; report writing techniques.

Sheriff’s Litigation and Public Records Coordinator

Job Description

Under general direction, manages civil and criminal litigation support services, liability exposure, and responses to Public Records Act (PRA) requests within the Sheriff’s Office and supervises assigned staff.

This classification is unique to the Sheriff’s Office. The incumbents are responsible for the preparation and analysis of legal documents. The position functions as the agency’s liaison with County Counsel, exchanging information between the two departments. The incumbent is subject to call out for critical incidents.
Responds to critical incidents regarding third party exposure, including but not limited to, officer involved shootings and major accidents; interviews officers and witnesses, and identifies mitigating or contributory factors;
