This is the third level of the Sheriff’s Records classification series. The Sheriff’s Records Unit Supervisor is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Records Supervisor by its full supervisory responsibility. Incumbents perform specialized support functions requiring in-depth knowledge and experience in the Records Section and provide direct support to high-level management.

  • Plans, organizes and supervises records staff
  • Performs highly technical and specialized administrative work within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities, or Records
  • May be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays, and may be required to work overtime and in outlying County areas
Requirements

 

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • 4 years of progressively responsible clerical experience, including 2 years as a Sheriff’s Records Supervisor OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
  • Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 50 net wpm within the last 2 years
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License may be required upon appointment for some positions

Sheriff’s Records Supervisor

 

Job Description

Under direction, supervises assigned shift; trains staff in functions of the records section; performs specialized technical work within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities or Records; interacts with incarcerated persons, provides assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement.

The Sheriff’s Records Supervisor is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Records Specialist by its supervisory responsibility for an assigned shift. Incumbents serve as a technical resource and provide specialized support activities requiring extensive knowledge and experience analyzing complex information and data.

Requirements

 

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D or equivalent.
  • Three years of clerical experience including one year of experience as a Sheriff’s Records Specialist OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 50 net words per minute.
  • Possession of a Valid California Driver’s License is required upon appointment for some positions.

The Sheriff’s Records Specialist is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Records Supervisor, which supervises and performs specialized support activities requiring extensive knowledge and experience in the area of assignment.

  • Performs technical support functions required to research and process law enforcement records within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities, or Records, which may include: interacting with incarcerated persons, criminal database verification, and providing assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement
  • Performs highly technical and specialized administrative work within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities, or Records
  • May be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays and may be required to work overtime and in outlying County areas

Under supervision, performs a wide variety of clerical support services to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, which may include: interacting with incarcerated persons, criminal database verification, providing assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement and supervising employees in lower levels of the Sheriff’s Support series.

This is the second level of the Sheriff’s Support classification series. The Sheriff’s Support Specialist is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Support Technician by its supervisory role and specialized support activities requiring extensive knowledge and experience in the area of assignment. 

Requirements
  • High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent

Deputy Coroner

 

Job Description

Under supervision to investigate and report on cases of death which fall within the jurisdiction of the Coroner’s Office. Conducts investigations to determine mode, manner, cause of death and identity of decedents; checks medical records and other sources to gather information necessary to ascertain cause of death; requests various specialists such as toxicologists, bacteriologists and other skilled persons to aid in arriving at cause of death within defined procedural limits; cooperates with all law enforcement agencies in obtaining evidence in cases of violent death.

Requirements

The equivalent of two (2) years of full time, paid investigative experience which provides knowledge of investigative principles and techniques.

Successful completion of Penal Code Section 832 course, prior to employment; or, successful completion no later than the first anniversary of employment as a Deputy Coroner. Employment beyond the one year probationary period is contingent upon completion of the Penal Code Section 832 course and satisfactory work performance.

Applicants must successfully complete a firearms course as prescribed by the Sheriff-Coroner within the one year probationary period. Applicants are required to qualify and carry a firearm.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

Physical Examination: A rigid medical examination by the County Physician is required.

Minimum Age: 21 years of age by the final filing date.

Maintenance Plumber

 

Job Description

This is a continuous recruitment position. 

  • Installs, maintains and repairs plumbing, water and sewer systems in county buildings and facilities
  • Installs, maintains and makes minor repairs to septic systems, water heaters, pumps, heat exchangers, air handlers and other plumbed appliances and equipment
  • Installs wash basins, urinals, toilet bowls and toilet tanks and other plumbing fixtures
  • Installs insulation and protection of hot and cold water piping; operates machine to cut, ream and thread pipe

  • Operates drain cleaning equipment, such as snakes, hydrostatic jet stream, etc.

  • Picks up building and plumbing materials for jobs from retailers and other off-site locations, as necessary

Identification Technician I/II

Identity Technician I
This is the trainee level of the Identification Technician series. Incumbents work under close supervision while developing the skills required for the fully qualified working level. After one year of experience as an Identification Technician I, an individual is eligible to be considered for promotion to Identification Technician II. Promotions are considered on a merit basis subject to recommendation by the department head and approval of the Director of Personnel.

Identity Tech II
This is the journey level of the Identification Technician series. This class is distinguished from Identification Technician I by responsibility for the full range of identification technician duties independent of direct supervision. Incumbents act in a lead capacity and assist in orientation and training of new employees in the classification of Identification Technician I.

Aircraft Pilot

 

Job Description

This is a continuous recruitment position.

Under direction, operates a rotary-wing and/or fixed-wing aircraft in support of law enforcement operations, search-and-rescue operations, marijuana eradication, surveillance operations and surveillance operations.

Aircraft pilots may fly in urban, desert, and mountainous environments in support of law enforcement operations; may be required to work shifts of varying durations and days as needed; may be required to instruct non-aviation personnel on the safety principles to be observed while working on or around aircraft.

Requirements

Examination:
Appraisal (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the work based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of application.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent AND the following certifications/licenses:
  • Valid and current FAA Second Class Medical Certificate issued by an authorized medical examiner (AME).
  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.

AND

Option I:

Required helicopter flight experience:

  • FAA Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot with Rotorcraft-Helicopter rating.
  • Minimum 2000 hours PIC Helicopter flight time
  • Minimum 500 hours in medium (Type 2) turbine powered helicopters.
  • Minimum 500 hours PIC in mountainous terrain, routinely making takeoffs and landings to unimproved landing areas at density altitudes exceeding 4500’ MSL.
  • Night Vision Goggle endorsement with a minimum of 200 hours PIC flight time utilizing Night Vision Goggle devices.
  • Minimum 500 hours PIC performing low-level missions in law-enforcement patrol, search and rescue, vertical reference operations over mountainous or forested areas, or comparable fire service or military operations.

Desired Helicopter Flight Experience

  • Certified Flight Instructor with Rotorcraft-Helicopter endorsement
  • Night Vision Goggle Instructor endorsement
  • Vertical reference and external load operations experience
  • UH-1H or other similar Bell Helicopter

OR

Option II:

Required Fixed-Wing experience:

  • FAA Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot with Airplane-Multi Engine Land (AMEL) rating.
  • Airplane Instrument Rating.
  • Minimum 1500 hours PIC Airplane.
  • Minimum 200 hours in PIC Category and Class (ASEL or AMEL).
  • Minimum 100 hours of PIC night flight time.
  • Minimum 75 hours of PIC flight time solely by reference to instruments (actual/simulated).

Desired Fixed-Wing Experience:

  • Certified Flight Instructor Airplane
  • Instrument Flight Instructor Airplane (CFII)
  • Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI)

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:
Physical Examination: In addition to requiring a Class II Medical Certificate, a rigid medical examination by the County Physician is required. The examination includes spine and chest x-rays, blood chemistry and electro-cardiograph tests. Weight must be proportionate to height and age.

Vision: 20-100 uncorrected in each eye, corrected to 20-20, no color deficiency. No permanent or progressive eye abnormalities.

Hearing: No hearing deficiency.

Character: Applicants must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony law violations will be disqualifying, and, except for a limited number of traffic offenses, misdemeanor offenses may be disqualifying.
