This is a continuous recruitment position.

This is the third level of the Sheriff’s Records classification series. The Sheriff’s Records Unit Supervisor is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Records Supervisor by its full supervisory responsibility. Incumbents perform specialized support functions requiring in-depth knowledge and experience in the Records Section and provide direct support to high-level management.

  • Plans, organizes and supervises records staff
  • Performs highly technical and specialized administrative work within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities, or Records
  • May be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays, and may be required to work overtime and in outlying County areas
Requirements

 

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • 4 years of progressively responsible clerical experience, including 2 years as a Sheriff’s Records Supervisor OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
  • Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 50 net wpm within the last 2 years
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License may be required upon appointment for some positions

Sheriff’s Records Supervisor

 

Job Description

Under direction, supervises assigned shift; trains staff in functions of the records section; performs specialized technical work within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities or Records; interacts with incarcerated persons, provides assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement.

This is the second level of the Sheriff’s Records classification series. The Sheriff’s Records Supervisor is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Records Specialist by its supervisory responsibility for an assigned shift. Incumbents serve as a technical resource and provide specialized support activities requiring extensive knowledge and experience analyzing complex information and data.

Requirements

 

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D or equivalent.
  • Three years of clerical experience including one year of experience as a Sheriff’s Records Specialist OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 50 net words per minute.
  • Possession of a Valid California Driver’s License is required upon appointment for some positions.

This is the entry-level of the Sheriff’s Records classification series. Incumbents gather and inspect local, state, and federal criminal history; apply penal codes, rules and regulations accordingly. The Sheriff’s Records Specialist is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Records Supervisor, which supervises and performs specialized support activities requiring extensive knowledge and experience in the area of assignment.

  • Performs technical support functions required to research and process law enforcement records within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities, or Records, which may include: interacting with incarcerated persons, criminal database verification, and providing assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement
  • Performs highly technical and specialized administrative work within the Sheriff’s Office assigned to Substations, County jail facilities, or Records
  • May be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays and may be required to work overtime and in outlying County areas

Under supervision, performs a wide variety of clerical support services to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, which may include: interacting with incarcerated persons, criminal database verification, providing assistance to the public and other branches of law enforcement and supervising employees in lower levels of the Sheriff’s Support series.

This is the second level of the Sheriff’s Support classification series. The Sheriff’s Support Specialist is distinguished from the Sheriff’s Support Technician by its supervisory role and specialized support activities requiring extensive knowledge and experience in the area of assignment. 

Requirements
  • High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent
  • 3 years of progressively responsible clerical, general computer and office experience directly related to the area of assignment, including one year of experience as a Sheriff’s Support Technician or its equivalent OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Supervising Deputy Coroner

 

Job Description

Under general supervision, schedules and coordinates work assignments of subordinate staff; provides subordinate personnel with initial and ongoing field and office training; conducts investigations to determine the cause and mode of death and the identity of decedent cases in the Sheriff-Coroner’s jurisdiction.

Requirements

The equivalent of four (4) years of full-time experience comparable to the Kern County classification of Deputy Coroner.

Successful completion of a Penal Code 832 course and possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

Physical Examination: A rigid medical examination by the County Physician is required.

Minimum Age: 21 years of age by the final filing date.

Deputy Coroner

 

Job Description

Under supervision to investigate and report on cases of death which fall within the jurisdiction of the Coroner’s Office. Conducts investigations to determine mode, manner, cause of death and identity of decedents; checks medical records and other sources to gather information necessary to ascertain cause of death; requests various specialists such as toxicologists, bacteriologists and other skilled persons to aid in arriving at cause of death within defined procedural limits; cooperates with all law enforcement agencies in obtaining evidence in cases of violent death.

Requirements

The equivalent of two (2) years of full time, paid investigative experience which provides knowledge of investigative principles and techniques.

Successful completion of Penal Code Section 832 course, prior to employment; or, successful completion no later than the first anniversary of employment as a Deputy Coroner. Employment beyond the one year probationary period is contingent upon completion of the Penal Code Section 832 course and satisfactory work performance.

Applicants must successfully complete a firearms course as prescribed by the Sheriff-Coroner within the one year probationary period. Applicants are required to qualify and carry a firearm.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

Physical Examination: A rigid medical examination by the County Physician is required.

  • Installs, maintains and repairs plumbing, water and sewer systems in county buildings and facilities
